Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Philip's interest in music was sparked at an early age from being exposed to many different genres of music, both in concerts and at home. At the age of 6, he started his musical journey with classical Piano lessons until the age of 12, when he switched to the Guitar. As many other Bassists, it was not only the curiosity for the low frequencies, but also out of necessity for a bass player in the music school jazz band that made him switch to first the Bass Guitar and then soon after to the Double Bass. After falling in love with the sound and role of the bass, he decided to pursue a career in music, which led him to study with Rudi Engel and Christian Diener at the Hochschule fuer Musik Nuremberg, Germany in 2015. While primarily studying Jazz Double Bass, he also received lessons in Classical Double Bass and Bass Guitar. During the two years there, Philip became an active performer in the young Jazz-Scene in southern Germany. To further broaden his horizons, he decided to move to Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2017, to study at CODARTS, with dutch Bass legends Marius Beets, Stefan Lievestro and Frans van Geest. In 2018 he took private lessons from internationally renown Bassists Joe Martin, Orlando LeFleming and Or Bareket during a stay in New York. He finished his Bachelor Degree in 2020 and has since relocated to Amsterdam, where he is currently studying his master degree in Jazz performance.
